MSc Eng. Damian Grabowski – an industrial PhD student at Warsaw University of Technology, in cooperation with Łukasiewicz – Institute of Aviation – travelled to the California Institute of Technology in March this year to participate in the seventh edition of the Caltech Space Challenge. Out of 500 applicants, only 32 participants were selected, and Damian was the only Pole on the team.
The participants’ task was to design a space mission under the theme “Journey Through Blaze and Frost”. It involved a comet flyby followed by entering orbit around Venus to conduct observations Damian worked on tasks related to systems engineering and rocket propulsion. Two teams competed to prepare the better mission design. You can watch the work of the team (mission PARCHED), in which our PhD student participated, on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xtATcWwiBEI
The event was an excellent opportunity to collaborate in an international environment, learn methodologies and design approaches used by NASA, and compare them with systems applied in Europe. During the event, participants were also able to visit Caltech laboratories as well as the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory campus. More information about the program can be found here: https://www.spacechallenge.caltech.edu
We congratulate Damian on the opportunity to participate in such a prestigious and valuable event. We are proud to share achievements like this.
