PhD Student’s Work at the Museum of Modern Art

MSc Eng. Maciej Jurzyk is a PhD student at the Warsaw University of Technology who uses satellite data to develop modern urban planning solutions and combat climate change in cities. He has successfully translated his scientific passions into art by co-creating an exhibit titled “Urban Heat Island” during the 14th edition of the festival (under the theme “Fight for the Streets”) at the Museum of Modern Art, as part of the exhibition “Warsaw Under Construction 14.” Maciej was responsible for developing a map based on data from NASA Landsat and Copernicus Sentinel systems.

Maciej originally developed the project during his master’s studies. It presented an index indicating the need for increasing green infrastructure density in Warsaw. The map highlighted areas where deficiencies in blue-green infrastructure contribute to the intensification of the urban heat island effect. This is a crucial aspect when it comes to protecting the health of the city’s residents. The project was created in collaboration with Jan Mencwel and Marcel Świerkocki.

Maciej can also boast a victory in a prestigious international competition. His team’s project, “Oasis City Lab,” won a competition organized by the European Union Agency for the Space Programme (EUSPA). This placed them among the creators of the most innovative ideas in Europe! The project is a tool based on satellite data and AI algorithms, designed to monitor urban risks and optimize spatial planning.

Maciej’s work is a great example of how science and art can go hand in hand, and how the achievements of our PhD students are recognized in international competitions. We warmly congratulate him and keep our fingers crossed for his future successes!
